The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) said it regrets what it calls a misunderstanding regarding an incident that occurred last week when a Renamo delegation claims to have been prevented from using a hotel resort in Maputo city, for which they had paid in advance, to hold a meeting.
On arrival, the Renamo members were surprised to find a strong police presence ostensibly there to prevent the meeting, and to be told by the management of the hotel that they too had been instructed not to let the meeting take place.
However, speaking yesterday at the usual weekly briefing, PRM General Command spokesman Inacio Dina said there had been a misunderstanding on Renamo’s part, and that the police were there simply to ensure safety.
The police, according to Dina, have a constitutional duty and mandate to ensure the maintenance of order and security right across the country.
“If someone sees the police at some point in the street and it[seeing police] stops the person from getting to a space, we do not understand the meaning of this attitude,” Dina said, pointing out that when people see the police in a given place where they intend to carry out any legitimate business, they usually tend to be satisfied because it means they have the necessary protection.
