The President of the Republic and Commander-in-Chief of the Defence and Security Forces, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, on Friday (12 May) chaired the 12th Meeting of the National Defence and Security Council (CNDS), in Mueda, Cabo Delgado province.
Speaking to the press, CNDS General Secretary Basílio Monteiro said that the meeting was preceded by a visit to the Palma and Mocimboa da Praia operational theatres, giving CNDS members the opportunity to hear from the Defence and Security Forces (FDS) active there.
“In this session, important decisions were made both for the Local Force operating in Mueda and other places hit by terrorism and for the FDS in general,” Monteiro said. “The operational mechanism was reinforced, that is, equipment for a more aggressive confrontation with the enemy [was delivered],” he said.
“There is a very positive note in regard to an increase in combat morale of both the local force and the FDS,” Monteiro reported.
In the Friday CNDS session, important decisions were also taken for the insertion and motivation of the Local Force, which heretofore lacked a legal context for its operation and recognition on a national scale.
“The legal provision recognizes the Local Force as a military unit of the FDS, to combat harmful actions in the country,” Monteiro underlined.

In the same session, the Chief Migration Superintendent was also promoted, bolstering the structure of the Ministry of the Interior.
Regarding the Local Force, the Secretary General of the CNDS maintained that a historical survey was carried out that led to the conclusion that it would act as an auxiliary force, increasing the effectiveness of those confronting the insurrectionists.
“The message that can be conveyed at this moment is of trust in the FDS on the ground, because better days will come. The entire thrust of the deployment taking place is to improve combat action on the ground, and promote an environment of tranquillity and security in the country,” Basílio Monteiro concluded.
