The President of the Republic, Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, has received a letter from His Highness Sheik Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, inviting him to participate in the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28), taking place in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in November, the presidency announced in a statement issued this Thursday (11-05).
According to the statement, the invitation “is the recognition of the country’s capacity and experience in resilience to the impact of climate change, through the development of local risk limitation strategies using mitigation and adaptation actions”, and especially given the recurrent, extreme climate events that frequently afflict Mozambique.
Among items on the COP 28 agenda is a debate on the progress of countries towards achieving the Paris Agreement goal of limiting the increase in global warming to 1.5ºC by 2050, adds the statement.
“National climate change plans, known as Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), will be presented by the participating countries, and Mozambique will highlight the need to use energy with low carbon emissions and based on renewable sources as an alternative, in the medium and long term, to the current energy matrix focused on fossil fuels,” the presidency statement reads.
