A Memorandum of Understanding allocating financing of €2 million to strengthen environmental management in Macaneta has been signed between the Marracuene District Government, represented by District Administrator Shafee Sidat, and the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS), represented by Paolo Enrico Sertoli (Head of Maputo Regional Office).
The signing was witnessed by Governor of Maputo Province, Júlio Parruque, and the Ambassador of Italy to Mozambique, Gianni Bardini, at the Marracuene District Headquarters on Thursday (April 27).
The €2 million financing is being granted under the AICS’ AID program. 12550 “A-Geo: Environment, Blue and Green Economy and Employment”, The A-Geo program will promote sustainable and integrated management of marine and coastal natural resources from a blue and green economy perspective in the Macaneta Peninsula (Marracuente District), a territory characterized by the presence of different ecosystems, rich in biodiversity, but also by an increasing flow of tourists and a local economy based predominantly on the exploitation of natural resources, currently in the absence of an integrated management of the various existing economic activities.
The ‘Environment, Green/Blue Economy and Employment’ project, designed to “promote sustainable and integrated management of marine and coastal natural resources in the Macaneta peninsula, aims at carrying out actions to strengthen state bodies and local communities, while promoting sustainable economic and social development of the area”.
This goal foresees organising and strengthening the involvement of the Marracuene District office in the territorial planning of the Macaneta peninsula, and “promoting an active role of communities in sustainable development by promoting the development of activities related to the Green and Blue Economy”.
The project is to be implemented over a three-year time frame.
The event took place during a working visit by Governor Parruque to Marracuene District within the scope of local governance and with the aim of assessing levels of performance in the district as well as visiting socio-economic ventures and directing meetings and a rally, among other activities.
