The passage of Severe Tropical Storm Freddy has left more than 100,000 families without electricity in the central and northern regions of the country, Mozambique Electricity (EDM) announced on Saturday.
According to the National Institute of Meteorology (INAM), the storm hit the Mozambican coast on Saturday morning (08-03) accompanied by winds of 190 kilometres per hour, gusting up to 250 kilometres per hour.
“Right now, there are around 100,000 customers still without electricity. EDM’s multisectoral technical teams are working to restore the normal supply of electricity to the affected areas as quickly as possible,” a statement from EDM issued this Sunday afternoon reads.
EDM warns that rain and strong winds is constraining progress but reports that electricity supply to the entire northern region of the country was restored by 9:00 a.m. today.
Parts of Zambézia province still without electricity include Quelimane city, Namacurra, Nicoadala, Pebane, Mocubela and Maganja da Costa districts, the administrative post of Macuse and the Licuar area. In the city of Beira, the Macurrungo, Estoril, Munhava, Porto de Pesca, Pioneiros, Ponta Gea, Chota, Manga, Régulo Luís neighborhoods and the coal terminal are still without power after intense rain put the Munhava substation out of action.
Given the condition of the country’s electrical infrastructure, EDM recommends strict compliance with preventative and safety measures, including avoiding proximity to electrical equipment where possible, avoiding touching electrical cables or poles, and preventing children playing near damaged infrastructure.
EDM also cautions against touching electrical appliances with a wet or bare body and using power tools outdoors in humid conditions. Even during power outages, all electrical equipment should be considered ‘live’.
EDM continues to monitor the damage caused by Tropical Cyclone Freddy and thanks all concerned for their cooperation.
