Montepuez Ruby Mining (MRM) offered 2,300 school bags to children in vulnerable situations from two schools, in the district of Montepuez, namely, Mararange Primary and Secondary School, in the administrative post of Mirate, and Mpupene Primary School, in the administrative post of Namanhumbir.
At Mararange Primary and Secondary School, which is 70 km from the city of Montepuez, all 800 students enrolled from 1st to 10th grade received a school bag. At Mpupene Primary School, located in the village of Nsembia, about 25 km from the center of the district, school folders were distributed to each of the 1,500 children enrolled.
The provision of the school binders, which coincides with the beginning of the 2023 school year, came in response to requests from school principals and MRM’s awareness that many families could not provide all the necessary school supplies to their children, who previously had to walk long distances carrying books and notebooks in their They previously walked long distances carrying books and notebooks in their hands or in makeshift plastic bags.
School principals appreciated MRM’s gesture and highlighted the comfort that the school folders will bring to students, especially those who live far from the school.
In the near future, MRM will provide schoolbags to 800 more students: 500 from the elementary school in Nacoja and Mpene; and 300 students with special needs, in the villages surrounding MRM’s concession area, thus increasing the total number of students receiving a schoolbag from 2,300 to 3,100.
In 2022, it should be noted, Montepuez Ruby Mining distributed 1,500 school folders to elementary school in Nanune, Nseue, Namanhumbir, Mpene, Nanhupo and Wikuphuri.
The significant increase in the supply of school folders reflects, in part, the movement of many families to Montepuez as a result of insurgent attacks in several districts in Cabo Delgado, which has culminated in overcrowding in the district’s schools.
In response to the overcrowding in Montepuez schools, MRM and Gemfields Foundation, the solidarity arm of MRM’s majority shareholder and operator, have committed to providing a total of 10 classrooms and a computer lab, which were inaugurated last November by Cabo Delgado Governor Valige Tauabo.
Montepuez Secondary School received four more classrooms and the only operational computer lab in the district’s secondary schools. MRM also funded two more classrooms each at Cuirio Primary School, Mararange Primary School and Nanhupo “B” Primary School, the latter of which is yet to be completed.
These 10 classrooms, which will increase capacity to a total of 500 students per shift, are in addition to the four schools already built or rehabilitated with MRM funding, providing a combined benefit to over 2,000 students locally.
