Cardoso reported that around 18,000 people are in accommodation centres set up across the country, and that the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD) would continue to monitor those affected until they resume their normal lives.
“From the work carried out at the moment, in addition to humanitarian assistance, there is ongoing awareness-raising aimed at people who still remain in risk areas. Minister Cardoso clarified that at the moment, according to the weather forecast, the situation was set to improve, but institutions needed to remain alert and avoid crossing rivers, some of which are already overflowing.
“We know that there are still some crops in the fields, but we appeal to the populations not to go there. because the machambas are flooded. It is better to wait for new guidelines from the institutions, especially from the INGD, before families to return to their homes,” she added.
In general, communities had followed the INGD’s appeals to leave high-risk zones, the minister said. Rural residents were also evacuating their animals, especially cattle, to safe areas.
