The Mozambican government has again called for a cease-fire in Russia’s war against Ukraine.
Speaking at a meeting of the United Nations Security Council in New York, marking a year since the start of the Russian invasion, the Mozambican representative, Pedro Comissario, also pointed to the devastating impact of the conflict on countries, particularly in Africa, which had imported much of their grain from Ukraine.
“With this conflict, civilians, particularly women and children, are assailed by acts of violence, and their lives have been changed for ever”, he declared. “Furthermore, the conflict has a negative impact on domestic and foreign trade”.
“The social and economic impact on developing countries, especially in Africa, has been enormous”. Comissario added.
He stressed the willingness of African states to find alternatives to alleviate their economies from dependence. “Many of our countries”, he claimed, “are willing to contribute towards reducing the high prices of energy and of foodstuffs, and of the difficulties in access to potential international markets”.
He added that, from an African perspective, wars are ended by means of peaceful solutions, and so the two parties should be called to the negotiating table.
“We know that wars result in suffering”, declared Comissario. “It is our collective mission, as the international community, to work to solve the conflict by means of negotiations and peaceful solutions. We need to bring the parties at war to commit themselves to negotiation”.
Mozambique has refused to take sides in the war, and thus Comissario’s statement merely reiterates a longstanding position of the Mozambican government.
