Two teenagers aged 14 and 15 died on Friday (17-02), drowned in the overflowing Limpopo river in Macarretane, Chókwè district, Gaza province.
The funeral was held on Sunday.
The girls were attempting to harvest maize in already submerged waters, near the Macarretane dam, Gaza Governor Maragrida Chongo told TVM, urging the public not to risk their lives picking crops in flooded areas.
“We are seeing the flooding of large areas of crops, including maize, beans and vegetables,” Governor Chongo said. “Some people still try to go and harvest them. Let’s harvest (agricultural products) where conditions allow, but when we see that it is dangerous, better to give it up as lost, and we will see what happens after this situation passes.”
The situation in the region’s river basins is cause for concern, with flooding starting to occur, especially in the lower areas.
