Portugal’s secretary of state for foreign affairs and cooperation on Monday in Maputo expressed Portugal’s solidarity in the face of the floods in recent weeks in southern Mozambique, reiterating Lisbon’s openness to support the affected communities.
“I had the opportunity to express to the Mozambican deputy minister of foreign affairs and cooperation, Manuel Gonçalves, our solidarity for the difficulties arising from the floods that have hit southern Mozambique in recent days,” Francisco André told the media in Maputo.
The Portuguese secretary of state for foreign affairs and cooperation was speaking moments after a meeting at the ministry of foreign affairs and cooperation in the Mozambican capital, as part of a working visit that began on Monday in the country.
At issue are the floods that affected southern Mozambique last week, with the official registry of seven deaths and 37,000 people affected, according to data from the National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD).
“We express, of course, our availability for any support that may be required on our part,” the Portuguese minister stressed.
Francisco André is in Mozambique until Friday, and his schedule includes visits to the provinces of Sofala, Nampula and Cabo Delgado, where he will visit projects supported by Portugal.
“They are generally exemplary projects. Well organised and well coordinated with the Mozambican authorities,” said Francisco André, adding that his visit would serve to analyse the “excellent” relations between the two states.
During his visit to Mozambique, Francisco André will sign a memorandum of understanding with the Mozambican ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Mota Engil company for the rehabilitation of the Chapel of Our Lady of Baluarte, on Mozambique Island (Nampula).
