Director of Maintenance at AdRMM-Águas da Região Metropolitana de Maputo, João Francisco, yesterday said that the restoration of supply which started on Sunday night would be completed within three days.
The rain falling since last week in Maputo province has swollen the Umbeluzi River, forcing the deactivation of some electrical equipment to prevent damage. As a result, more than 10 neighbourhoods have had water restrictions since last Saturday.
To minimize the problem, this Sunday, 37 alternative tanker trucks supply points were created, 19 in Maputo city and 18 in Maputo province. Not all residents were covered, however. The Alto-Maé, Polana, Somerchild, Coop and Zona-central neighbourhoods still did not have water on Monday.
“We already have the electricity re-established, since last night (Sunday),” Francisco says, “and we have started the process of filling the reserves to start the supply restoration. The replacement process is gradual, they are replenishing the reserves to carry out the normal supply in the distribution network and we will prioritize those neighbourhoods which were not supplied alternatively. We hope that the process will be completed in the next three days.”
According to the same source, because of the rains, “the structures were submerged, so we are cleaning the entire structure”. In the first few days, therefore, the water may appear a little different, but it will be safe for consumption, Francisco guarantees.
