Three Mozambican students have been left homeless in Turkey following the earthquakes which hit the country and Syria on Monday, the Mozambican government announced on Tuesday, saying it was providing support.
“In Turkey, three Mozambican students were identified who are currently homeless,” said Ludovina Bernardo, spokesperson for the Council of Ministers at the end of yesterday’s meeting.
There is no record of other Mozambicans among the victims.
The National Institute for Disaster Management (INGD) in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation (MINEC) “are working to create conditions of shelter and security” once the students in question have been identified, Bernardo explained.
“We want to ensure that the government is taking all measures to ensure that they are accommodated and ensure their survival in that country,” she concluded
The combined death toll of the earthquakes topped 9,600 people on Wednesday.
The Turkish government of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has declared a three-month state of emergency in the 10 affected provinces.
Meanwhile, Mozambican broadcaster ‘TV Miramar’ interviewed Mozambicans residing in Turkey who experienced the earthquake, reporting that they are in good health.
According to Miramar, Mozambican students tin the country were already mobilizing in groups to provide help to earthquake victims.
