The Mozambican government said this Tuesday, February 7th, that work was underway with a view to supporting Mozambicans living in Turkey who were affected by the earthquake that struck the country.
“The executive is aware of the situation of Mozambicans in Turkey. We are providing all measures so that they can be accommodated and to safeguard their survival at the moment in that country,” spokeswoman for this Tuesday’s Cabinet meeting Ludovina Bernardo said.
According to the source, so far, three Mozambican students have been identified as lacking shelter. The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management (INGD) is working in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to provide support.
“The INGD, in coordination with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is working to provide shelter and create minimum conditions for these Mozambicans to remain safe, with housing and stability,” Bernardo explained.
In turn, the Turkish ambassador to Mozambique, Avni Aksoy, told ‘O País’ that there are hundreds of Mozambican students in the provinces affected by the earthquake there, while noting that there is as yet no record of deaths among them.
“With regard to Mozambican students in Turkey, so far we have no bad news. We hope everyone is safe. We know that their families in Mozambique are in contact with them,” Ambassador Aksoy said, cited by ‘O País’.
The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, has addressed a note of condolences to Turkey and Syria over the deadly quake.
The provisional balance of victims of the earthquake already points to more than 9,500 deaths registered in both countries.
The 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck in Turkey at 4:17 a.m. local time on Monday near the border with Syria, and was one of the strongest to hit the country in the last century.
