Road traffic on the road between Memba and Nacala-a-Velha in Nampula province has been interrupted since Sunday following the sweeping away by floodwaters on Sunday night of the bridge over the Chuhupite river in Nahavara, Memba district.
According to Memba administrator Juma Cateria, the bridge had been showing signs of weakness as a result of past bad weather, and the lack of intervention meant it could not resist the current seasonal onslaught.
Cateria reported that a National Roads Administration (ANE) team was on the ground studying viable detours to ensure the circulation of people and goods in the region while emergency remedial works are carried out.
