The President of Belarus says his country wants to increase cooperation with Mozambique, especially in the agriculture sector, the Belarusian state agency BELTA reports.
“Mozambique is the largest country in the region, with a thousand kilometres of coastline, and an agricultural sector which requires a lot of investment,” President Alexander Lukashenko said in Harare.
After a meeting with the president of Zimbabwe on Tuesday, Lukashenko said that Emmerson Mnangagwa “is on good terms with the leadership in Mozambique and can assist in this matter”.
Speaking on the second of a three-day official trip, the Belarusian head of state added: “We will soon discuss how to transfer our experience of cooperation between Zimbabwe and Belarus, to Mozambique.”
On Tuesday, the two countries signed trade and cooperation agreements covering double taxation, the mutual recognition of qualifications, and the supply of agricultural equipment and tools to Zimbabwe.
Lukashenko has also offered to supply Zimbabwe with fertilizer, claiming that, despite Western sanctions, Belarus “has been able to sell large amounts of fertilizer”. “There are states ready to cooperate with Belarus,” the president claimed.
Belarus has drawn heavy criticism from Western countries for an increasingly violent crackdown on domestic opposition, for holding elections that many observers found lacking in transparency and for allowing the territory to be used as a base for Russian troops to attack Ukraine.
Along with 12 other countries, including Iran and North Korea, Belarus and Zimbabwe both voted at the UN General Assembly last year against imposing sanctions on Russia for its invasion of Ukraine.
