The National Commissioner of the South African Police (SAPS), Fannie Masemola, was today set to lead “a delegation of senior officers to assess police’s response to cross-border crimes in the Umkhanyakude District in KwaZulu-Natal,” close to the border with Mozambique.
“The Commissioner’s visit follows the recent torching of at least six vehicles including a tourist bus and a truck on the R22 route between Hluhluwe and Mbazwane,” reads a South African police statement which Lusa has seen.
The visit covers the rural district of Umkhanyakude in KwaZulu-Natal, the South African police said, and would include meetings with communities living there, including Umhlabuyalingana and Hlabisa, close to the border with Mozambique.
Some Mozambican carriers making the connection between Maputo and Durban in the province of KwaZulu-Natal on the east coast of South Africa, suspended activity on Sunday following reports of attacks and robberies on a South African road section through the border of Ponta do Ouro, near the northern end of the South African district of Umkhanyakude.
The Mozambican Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation yesterday called the situation arising from attacks on Mozambican vehicles in South Africa “complicated”, and said efforts were being made by the governments of the two countries to address the situation.
Meanwhile, in another development, the South African police in Nelspruit announced that three vehicles worth more than 3.3 million rand (€175,000), had been seized at the Lebombo border post over the weekend.
