Mozambique’s Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME) has created a Commission of Inquiry to investigate the causes of the fuel spill in Munhava, city of Beira, Sofala province.
The incident took place on Friday (20-01), when a fuel pipeline in the Porto da Beira enclosure broke.
Residents of the surrounding areas immediately took advantage of the opportunity to illegally gather up the fuel, a practice that has in the past caused many deaths.
The diesel-type fuel that quickly spread across the site turned into a stream as men, women, teenagers and children struggled to collect the diesel in containers.
Thanks to the swift intervention of members of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), order was restored and the worst avoided.
The Deputy National Director for Hydrocarbons and Fuels, José Muhai, told Radio Mozambique that the incident involved a pipeline transporting fuel to Zimbabwe, adding that everything had been done to minimise environmental damage.
“The incident occurred in the context of fuel pumping. We have a pipeline there that connects to the main pipeline that goes to Zimbabwe from the facilities of the Companhia do Pipeline Moçambique-Zimbabwe (CPMZ),” Muhai explained.
