Former President of Mozambique, Armando Emílio Guebuza, turns 80 today. In a congratulatory message, President Filipe Nyusi lays out the trajectory of the former head of state’s life and his role in the construction of Mozambique.
Below is the message in full.
“Comrade President Guebuza.
Today, 80 years have passed since the day you were born, in the village of Murrupula, in the province of Nampula.
Your childhood and youth, spent in almost all of colonised Mozambique, awakened in you the need for freedom, not only for the people, but for the very land where you were born, to build a dream which is this country we live in, as a place of opportunities for everyone.
Your engagement, along with other young people of your generation, always under strong pressure and constant surveillance by the colonial authorities, made you a man determined to confront the coloniser, hence your decision to commit, at an early age, to the cause of the liberation of the motherland.
Today, we celebrate an age milestone, achieved amid sacrifices made since your youth, as I said, entirely dedicated to building a strong, prosperous and peaceful Mozambique.
Comrade President!
Your life trajectory is intertwined with the history of Mozambique, which today stands proud, thanks to the commitment of generations and more compatriots from the past and present, above all the unforgettable contribution of the liberators of the land of which your, Comrade President , are a part .
On this special occasion, therefore, on behalf of the Mozambican people throughout the national territory and in the diaspora and in my own and my family’s, I wish to offer the warmest congratulations on your eightieth birthday, with wishes for good health, quality health, and long life.
Time always records its history.
Happy Birthday Armando Emílio Guebuza, Former President of our Country.”
