Mpumalanga police arrested two men at Nkomozi Toll Plaza during a bust in which drugs worth R50 million was seized.
Police said 58 plastic bags, containing 53kg of crystal meth, were stashed in different compartments of a car.
Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said “the recovery led to the arrest of two Mozambican nationals, Reginald Francisco De Maura Tomàs, 32, and Reginaldo Joào Tomàs, 30, on Tuesday at about 10:00”.
He said that, on the day of the arrest, officers were alerted to the drugs in the vehicle by a police dog.
Preliminary investigations indicated the vehicle was not reported stolen, Mohlala said.
The duo appeared in the Barberton Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
They were remanded in custody for their second court appearance, which will be in Low’s Creek Magistrate’s Court.
