The Secretary of State for Inhambane province, Amosse Macamo, says that a commission of inquiry has been created to establish why the police opened fire on the public during a disturbance, and raises the possibility of accountability, since the police are not supposed to use lethal force against the population.
“We are carrying out internal work to find out what really happened, and we can hold them [the police] accountable, because it is not our intention, it is not our orientation, this is not what we want – that the police use lethal force against their own population,” Macamo said.
Macamo also appealed to the public to use legal institutions for conflict resolution and not to opt for vigilante justice.
The police have said that they were forced to fire shots to disperse a crowd who intended to lynch a citizen accused of kidnapping a child and were trying to grab police agents’ firearms.
