The Armed Forces for the Defence of Mozambique (FADM) on Sunday launched Operation Vulcão IV, which aims to intensify the pursuit of terrorists and the destruction of their bases north of the Messalo river, in Muidumbe district, and to the west of the administrative post of Chai, in Macomia district, Cabo Delgado province.
The FADM has the support of the Defence Forces of Rwanda and of the Military Mission of the Southern African Development Community (SAMIM).
A FADM press release, cited by AIM, states that ‘Vulcão IV’ also aims to restore peace and the free movement of people and goods in the northern part of the country, particularly in Cabo Delgado, which since October, 2017, has been the locus of terrorist attacks which have already caused more than 3,000 deaths and internally displaced close to one million people.
Operation ‘Vulcão I’ secured the destruction of the terrorists’ Katupa base, the elimination of ringleaders and the seizure of weapons caches and other materiel.
The note highlights that Vulcão IV, together with other operations aimed at pursuing the enemy, has had a direct impact on the defence and security of Mozambique.
The Defence and Security Forces (FDS) also took the opportunity to renew its appeal to all citizens who have been seduced into joining the terrorists to return home, re-join their families, and “work with a view to developing our country”.
