More and more people are returning to their areas of origin, which they had been forced to leave due to terrorist actions that have devastated the northern and central districts of Cabo Delgado, but which are currently enjoying an improved security situation.
Speaking recently in the city of Pemba, the Secretary of State for Cabo Delgado province, António Supeia, reported that 361,000 people had already voluntarily returned to their areas of origin.
Supeia highlighted Palma, Mocímboa da Praia, Muidumbe and Quissanga as the districts with the highest number of returnees. In those districts, 2,000 employees and agents of the state are providing services to the population.
He acknowledged that, despite returning, people still feel the lack of basic services, given that the Cabo Delgado Reconstruction Plan is, for various reasons, not yet being fully implemented. However, António Supeia did not fail to highlight the involvement of some non-governmental organizations in the recovery of districts affected by terrorist attacks.
Meanwhile, the NGO ‘Doctors Without Borders’, reveals in a press release that at least 72,000 people have already returned to their areas of origin in the district of Mocímboa da Praia, but says that the situation of families there is precarious in terms of access to food, drinking water, sanitation and health services. Patients with special needs, such as children and pregnant women, for example, are transferred to the village of Mueda, which is 100 kilometres from Mocímboa da Praia.
