Mozambique: MJCRA and TotalEnergies sign agreement for Human Rights Intervention in Palma

The Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs (MJCRA) and TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Area 1 Limitada, as the operator of the Mozambique LNG project, signed on Monday [12 December], in Maputo, a memorandum of understanding which aims to establish the implementation of a Human Rights Intervention Plan for the Afungi region, in Cabo Delgado Province, Mozambique.

The Human Rights Intervention Plan will be developed by MJCRA, with logistic support from TotalEnergies to assist the populations of Palma district in Cabo Delgado Province, who were particularly affected by the armed conflict in that region of the country to prevent and retrieve the effects of human rights violations.

The above-mentioned plan will have as main objectives to ensure that there is a popular awareness of human rights norms in the Afungi peninsula and to guarantee that citizens, and the most vulnerable people, can receive legal assistance in cases of human rights violations related to the armed conflict.

To ensure the implementation of the Human Rights Intervention’s Plan, TotalEnergies will support the costs of acquiring the necessary equipment and materials, as well as provide logistical support for the teams dedicated to the execution of the plan.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs, Manuel Didier Malunga, said that the signing of the Memorandum represents a demonstration of the MJCR’s institutional commitment to establish a cooperation mechanism with TotalEnergies Mozambique to develop actions to prevent and retrieve the violation of Human Rights in the Afungi Region, where TotalEnergies is located in the Hydrocarbon Exploration area under concession.

In this context, we believe that the signing of this memorandum represents a step of paramount importance for the communities of Palma and for the sustainable development of our business.”
