The Ministry of National Defence still does not know what led to the confrontation between three Botswana soldiers serving in the SAMIM mission in Cabo Delgado, which culminated in the death of two of them in Pemba.
There is still little information surrounding the death of two soldiers, a woman and a man, and the injury of another member of the SADC mission fighting terrorism in Cabo Delgado. All that is known so far is that there was a disagreement, which culminated in the misfortune.
A SAMIM statement on the incident dated Friday, 02-12, indicates that a male with the rank of major shot two female colleagues, killing one instantly and injuring the other, before turning the weapon on himself. All three were from the Botswana contingent stationed in Pemba.
Investigations were underway to determine the circumstances that led to the incident, and the injured member was in a stable condition and receiving medical care at a SAMIM level I Hospital in Pemba and, the SAMIM statement added.
When asked, Casimiro Augusto Mueio, permanent secretary of the Ministry of National Defence, said that efforts were being made with a view to clarifying it.
“The matter is being investigated, we have not yet had the conclusive report,” said Casimiro Augusto Mueio, permanent secretary of the Ministry of National Defence.
“The fact that this is an operational theatre requires great care when referring to this information and making it public, so I would suggest that you wait a little longer. Official information will reach the public; I say this because there has been some lack of clarity in the media, so let’s wait for official information,” he appealed.
This is the first public statement by a senior official at the Ministry of National Defence since the Cabo Delgado incident came to light.
