Mozambique: Idio Chichava wins Gulbenkian's SEDA Award alongside Dorothée Munyaneza
Mário Macilau
A Mario Macilau exhibition, “Apocalipse”, opens at the Portuguese Cultural Centre in Maputo on Thursday at 6:00 p.m..
The exhibition sees Macilau presenting a body of work which addresses several cultural, economic and socio-political issues. In his own words: “This is a work that results from the analysis of the current time, with regard to everyday life in a local context and it is also the result of a personal search for the perception of reality based on life experience.”
The works gathered for this exhibition seek to express dynamism without complexity, using children’s figures, as if the elements were changing in the process of a search towards a final point of integration.
Macilau, holder of several awards, and with an international career in photography, in this exhibition reveals another facet of his artistic career, presenting this time a set of figurative and abstract paintings and installations.
“Apocalypse” will run until September 2.
Born in Maputo, where he lives and works, Macilau is a multidisciplinary artist, best known as a photographer, but who sometimes writes poetry, paints, makes video art and installations.
Macilau has been regularly featured in solo and group exhibitions, both in Mozambique and abroad. Highlights include: Making Africa: A Continent of Contemporary Design (2015), at the Vitra Design Museum, curated by Amelie Klein, and Okwui Enwezor as consultant curator; Pangaea: New Art from Africa and Latin America, at the Saatchi Gallery, London (2014); Biennale Fotofest, Houston (2014); International Biennial of Casablanca, Morocco (2014); Time, Belo-Galsterer Gallery, in Lisbon (2013); Biennale OFF Dak’art, Dakar (2012); Rencontres de Bamako, Bamako (2011); VI Chobi Mela Photo Festival, Dhaka (2011); and Spring Photo, Beijing (2011).
