Raul Domingos, the leader of the Party for Peace, Democracy and Development (PDD) and former head of the Renamo delegation in the peace negotiations which led to the Rome Accords in 1992, said yesterday that at the time the parties only negotiated because there was military pressure.
“I know the truth hurts, but the experience of the General Peace Agreement shows that we only negotiated because there was military pressure,” said Raul Domingos, quoted by Lusa.
Raul Domingos said that the current military conflict is the result of a political problem and that the system needs reform. “The political system that we adopted, in which the winner of the general election takes all, including at the local level, seems inappropriate because voters who always vote for a certain party do not understand why are they ruled by another party,” said Domingos, speaking in Maputo at a debate on the political situation in Mozambique.
The former Renamo number two argues that the country could adopt the South African model, in which each party governs the provinces where it wins regardless of which party wins at national level.
