Analysts say it is essential that international mediation creates conditions for a face-to-face meeting between the head of the Mozambican state Filipe Nyusi and Renamo leader Afonso Dhlakama in order to establish a climate of trust and allow effective peace Mozambique.
One of the factors besetting the political dialogue between the Mozambican government and Renamo is a lack of mutual trust.
Currently, the dialogue is suspended at the request of the mediators to allow for the reorganization and harmonization of the agenda, but politically, it is rumoured that the suspension indicates some apprehension on the part of the mediators on the direction matters are taking.
During their stay in Maputo, mediators spoke with the Renamo leader by telephone, asking him to cease all military attacks, but were refused. Some analysts see this simply as Renamo continuing to press the government, but it can also be seen as reflecting a lack of confidence in Mozambican institutions on Renamo’s part.
For academic Brazão Mazula, former Rector of the Eduardo Mondlane University, it is essential that everything possible be done to arrange a meeting between President Nyusi and the Renamo leader, “because a meeting of this nature always gives an impetus to society”.
