Seventy-seven-year-old South African Wikkie du Plessis and his 69-year-old companion Eric Dry have been detained by police in Inhambane after being found in possession of undeclared merchandise, Folha de Maputo reports today.
The two South Africans, who identify themselves as missionaries, were reportedly caught loading a private plane with considerable amounts of vitamins not declared to the authorities. The merchandise, they say, was destined for Balama district in Cabo Delgado, an area hit by terrorist activity.
According to a source cited by Folha de Maputo, the two elderly people will remain in police custody while investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, TVM reported last week that three South African men had been arrested in Inhambane airport on suspicion of illegally transporting medicines in a private plane.
At the same time, reports circulating on social media claim that the third man is not South African but a United States citizen Ryan Koher [a pilot for Mission Aviation Fellowship].
