The Mozambican authorities on Monday began administering the second dose of the vaccine against the Covid-19 respiratory disease for adolescents.
It is hoped that the vaccination will reach 4.7 million adolescents between 12 and 17 years of age.
The Health Ministry has mobilized more than 3,200 vaccination teams, distributed among health units, schools, and places such as markets where large numbers of people are expected to be present.
Some of the brigades will be mobile.
The National Director of Public Health, Quinhas Fernandes, told reporters on Sunday that the campaign to administer the first dose of the vaccine for adolescents, held between 27 September and 12 October, met 99 per cent of its target. 4,790,035 children and adolescents were vaccinated, out of a target figure of 4,801,544.
Of these vaccinations, 2,816,393 occurred in schools, which was 59 per cent of the total.
As expected, the largest number of vaccinations took place in the most populous provinces – Nampula (967,559) and Zambezia (903,990).
The campaign to vaccinate adolescents ends on 25 November. The Health Ministry has invested about seven million US dollars in the campaign.
It follows the highly successful vaccination of Mozambicans aged 18 and above earlier in the year. By September 2022, Mozambique had vaccinated 96 per cent of its adult population against Covid-19 – one of the highest vaccination rates anywhere in the world.
