Over 1,000 people who fled armed attacks in Namuno district, northern Mozambique, and refugees in Nipepe district, need emergency support, said the governor of Niassa province, Dinis Vilankulo.
Vilankulo, cited today by public broadcaster Televisão de Moçambique, said that a team of several state bodies was surveying the needs of the displaced but described the needs as “multiform.
In total, there are around 284 families that have taken refuge in Nipepe district, Niassa province, after fleeing from neighbouring Namuno district, in Cabo Delgado province, due to armed attacks.
Cabo Delgado province has faced an armed insurgency promoted by rebels for five years, with some attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
The insurgency has led to a military response since a year ago with support from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community (SADC), liberating districts near gas projects. Still, new waves of attacks have emerged in the south of the region and neighbouring Nampula province.
In five years, the conflict has left one million people displaced, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), and about 4,000 dead, according to the ACLED conflict registration project.
