The company Corredor de Desenvolvimento do Norte (CDN) has announced ticket price increases for Northern Corridor passengers, citing escalating operating costs.
The CDN press release indicates rising fuel prices and operating costs as contributing to the tariff increase, which came into effect at the beginning of this month.
The new fare table raises the cost of a ticket from Nampula to Cuamba from 230 to 320 meticais in economy class and from 670 to 940 meticais in business class.
A ticket for Cuamba-Lichinga rose from 205 to 285 meticais (economy) or from 525 to 735 meticais (business).
Prices for passengers travelling between Cuamba to Entre Lagos rose from 65 to 90 meticais and from 150 to 210 meticais for economy and business class travel respectively.
The Northern Development Corridor is responsible for the integrated management, rehabilitation and commercial exploitation of the infrastructure of the port of Nacala in Nampula province and the railway network in northern Mozambique.
Coal mining in the Tete region made it possible to build a 912 kilometre long railway, including 200 kilometres across Malawi, and a deep-water port terminal in Nacala.
Currently, the line transports passengers and all types of cargo, in many cases all the way to Lichinga, the capital of Niassa, Mozambique’s most remote province.
