Three people have been arrested on suspicion of murdering Mozambican public prosecutor Marcelino Vilankulo in Matola on the outskirts of Maputo on April 11th of this year, according to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office (PGR) seen by Lusa.
Without providing details on the detainees or a motive, the PGR has announced that three men have been charged with first degree murder, possession of prohibited weapons and associating in order to commit a crime and were sent on July 28 to the Judicial Court of Maputo Province.
Two of the accused are also charged with money laundering.
“Because there is evidence of the involvement of more people, the prosecutor is proceeding with the investigation in order to establish the identity of the same and their respective accountability,” the statement reads.
According to the PGR, the arrests result from Criminal Investigation Police investigations carried out under the direction of the prosecution as part of the criminal proceedings opened following the crime.
Marcelino Vilanculos was serving as attorney general in Maputo when he was shot dead by unknown assailants on the night of April 11 while driving home in his car.
