Mozambique’s defence minister has praised the “positive results” of the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado province, saying that the joint force fighting rebels in the north has created a “break” in the logistical capacity of the insurgents.
“Joint military operations led by the Mozambique Defence Armed Forces (FADM), the Southern African Development Community Mission (SAMIM) and Rwandan Defence Forces have achieved positive results in the fight against terrorism in Cabo Delgado province, creating disruptions in the terrorists’ combative and logistical capacity,” said Cristóvão Chume, quoted yesterday in a press release from the Mozambican Defence Ministry.
Minister Chume was speaking during a virtual African Union Peace and Security Council meeting on Monday (07-11).

Although “positive” results are being recorded, the defence minister continued, the reinforcement of aerial, land and maritime surveillance remains essential to stop the rebels who have been terrorizing northern Mozambique for five years.
On the other hand, Chume highlights the importance of more effective intelligence operations and improving the strategic projection capacity of government forces fighting the insurgency in Cabo Delgado.
“Currently, the security situation in Mozambique is stable, and state institutions are fully operational. However, terrorism is still the greatest challenge to peace, security and territorial integrity,” the note from the Ministry of Defence of Mozambique reads.
Cabo Delgado province has been terrorized by armed violence since 2017, with some attacks claimed by the Islamic State extremist group.
