The Mozambican police arrested two men and seized 262 explosives and 150 detonators that were supposed to be used in illegal mining, the police told Lusa on Wednesday.
The two detainees, a Mozambican and a Zimbabwean, had smuggled material from Zimbabwe, seized on Monday in a suburb of Chimoio, central Mozambique.
The material was to be used in illegal gold mines in Chitima, Mario Arnaça, a police spokesman in Manica province, told Lusa.
“The individuals will be prosecuted for possession of prohibited weapons” for introducing the explosives into the country, Mário Arnaça stressed.
The possibility that the material was intended for armed groups operating in Cabo Delgado in northern Mozambique is also being investigated.
A criminal case was referred on Tuesday to the Public Prosecutor’s Office in Chimoio for legal proceedings, he added.
