Mozambique and Botswana signed two agreements in Gaborone last Wednesday ( 26 October): an agreement on extradition and an agreement on mutual legal assistance in criminal matters.
The purpose of these understandings is to improve bilateral cooperation in preventing and suppressing crime, whose rates have increased both nationally and transnationally.
The agreements were signed by Mozambique’s Minister of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs, Helena Kida, and her Tswana counterpart, Machana Ronald Shamukuni.
Under the understanding, extradition requests must contain, among other elements, information or a decision on the person sought, the person’s identity, nationality and whereabouts. Likewise, relevant legal provisions of the legislation relating to the offence must be included, as well as details of any applicable penalties and procedural documents of the indictment or conviction.
