More than 900,000 people in Sofala could be affected by floods and cyclonic winds in the coming months, according to forecasts for the 2022-2023 rainy season contained in the Provincial Contingency Plan.
The document names Beira, Dondo, Búzi, Nhamatanda, Caia, Chemba and Marromeu as the Sofala districts most likely to be affected by above-normal rainfall.
A representative of the National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) in Sofala said that rainfall was expected to increase the flow of the Zambezi, Púngoè, Save and Búzi rivers, potentially flooding areas used for agriculture.
