Mozambican authorities have dismantled a facility manufacturing methaqualone (‘mandrax’) in Machava, on the outskirts of Maputo city, in one of the largest seizures recorded this year, an official source announced on Wednesday.
“We can register it as one of the best seizures [of the year], at least so far,” said Amélia Machava, director of the Asset Recovery Office, quoted yesterday by Televisão de Moçambique (TVM).
The clandestine facility was uncovered in the course of actions carried out by this anti-corruption body.
The amount of mandrax seized – in the form of small pills – is still being established, Machava said, while Mozambican and Chinese citizens allegedly involved in the activity were detained.
According to the Mozambican authorities, the factory, where industrial machinery was found, had been operating for ten years as a commercial concern to conceal the manufacture of the drugs.
“The people involved practised normal commercial activity as if they were common traders, while they were, in fact, camouflaging this other activity,” Machava revealed.
Among other items seized at the site by the Asset Recovery Office were 59 vehicles, heavy vehicles and high-powered vehicles included, 112 fridges, and 50 boxes containing shoes.
International organisations place Mozambique on drug trafficking routes, mainly originating in Asia and crossing the Indian Ocean.
