The Nampula dam is the main source of water for the city of Nampula. With no rain forecast for the next two months, the regional administration of Águas do Norte has begun to reduce the daily amount of water released to FIPAG.
FIPAG is already reducing the amounts of water it distributes, and is only supplying neighbourhoods on alternate days.
Built more than 60 years ago, the Nampula dam was designed to supply 120,000 people, the city now has more than 800,000 inhabitants.
The clouds in the sky give the impression that it could rain at any moment. But that’s pure illusion, because the weather forecast indicates that it won’t rain anytime soon.
FIPAG’s role is to act on behalf of the state as the main interlocutor with any private operator. It is to manage, in an efficient and financially viable way, the public and private investment program in the water supply systems entrusted to it, including those entrusted on a transitional basis.
There has been a notable improvement in the water supply since the establishment of the Delegated Management Framework, which started in 2000 with the integration of five major urban centres (Maputo, Beira, Quelimane, Nampula and Pemba).
Currently, 21 systems are integrated into the framework, a number the government has decided to increase by a further 13.
