Early in the morning, dozens of vendors were already lined up in front of the Fish Market in Maputo, welding signs and posters for yet another protest march against what they consider to be usurpation of the space where they had for years carried out their activities.
The police were also punctual, and by around 8:00 a.m., after several rounds of negotiations, the march got the green light – but with some restrictions: No signs, posters and no chants.
The first short distance was covered in the spirit agreed, but it didn’t last. About half a kilometre from the Fish Market, the vendors pulled out the drums and burst into chanting.
In the old Fish Market, where work is already taking place, a mixed police force, including Rapid Intervention Unit elements, awaited the arrival of the vendors.
The vendors explained to Miramar that they had recently requested a meeting with the legal representatives of the new owners of the space. This meeting was to have taken place last week, but on the appointed day the counterparty did not arrive.
Consequently, they said, they would have to continue to fight for the compensation they believe they are entitled to, without creating chaos and disorder.
