The Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi and the leader of Renamo, Ossufo Momade on Friday committed to resume the Disarmament, Demobilisation and Reintegration (DDR) programme over the next few days.
In a statement issued on Friday afternoon Mirko Manzoni, the personal envoy of United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres, and head of the international contact group facilitating dialogue between the government and Renamo, says that “The Principals committed to resume DDR in the coming days and to move forward on the key topics discussed”.
According to Manzoni, who had the opportunity to take part in a meeting with the President of Mozambique and the leader of Renamo, both Parties discussed key topics relating to the ongoing implementation of the Maputo Accord for Peace and National Reconciliation.
Progress on DDR, as well as issues related to the modality and sustainability of the application of pensions and placement into the police force of Mozambique were central topics of discussion.
During the meeting Nyusi and Momade expressed their commitment to conclude the DDR by the end of the year.
Also, Nyusi and the leader of Renamo reaffirmed their dedication to prioritising dialogue as a building block for creating lasting peace.
“We stand together as the United Nations with the people of Mozambique to ensure the country remains on track to achieve definitive peace and national reconciliation for the benefit of all Mozambicans”, declared Manzoni is his statement.
Some of the issues discussed this Friday were addressed by Momade in Maputo while delivering his speech during the celebrations of the 30th anniversary of the General Peace Agreement, signed in Rome on 04 October 1992.
To fix these issues, which according to Momade threaten peace and reconciliation of Mozambicans, he calls for the full implementation of all agreements reached between the government and Renamo.
Once peace is achieved, says Momade, it is crucial to preserve it with tangible actions to ensure maintenance of an environment of national reconciliation and social justice.
According to Momade, there is a need to move away from all negative signs that threaten the Mozambican population, through the adoption of mechanisms for social inclusion and political tolerance.
