Mozambican President, Filipe Nyusi, on Tuesday asked for forgiveness, in the city of Pemba, capital of the northern province of Cabo Delgado, for citizens who joined terrorist groups, but had shown repentance and handed themselves over to the authorities for social reintegration.
“I came here to ask the population of Cabo Delgado to forgive our fellow citizens who were forced to join the terrorists, even those who went there on their own free will but show repentance. They are our brothers, although they have been formatted by terrorists. Let us welcome them with both hands,” urged the president quoted in the daily paper “Noticias”.
Nyusi, who was speaking at a rally in Gingone neighbourhood, on the outskirts of the city of Pemba, noted that Mozambican people are tolerant, and it was with this spirit that they managed to end the 16-year war between the government and Renamo, and accepted to live together with guerrillas of the former rebel movement.
“I know that this war is weird. It is different from the one we had before, in which, when we discovered that we were fighting because we had different ideas, we sat down, talked, and the war ended,” explained the President.
During the rally, Nyusi presented 22 people, including children, women, and elderly who managed to flee from the insurgents to hand themselves in to the local authorities.
This group joins another one, made up of 42 people, who were also presented by the President in the town of Mocímboa da Praia, to where he went on Tuesday to assess the security situation, check the restoration of basic services, such as water and electricity health and commerce, aiming at mobilizing residents to move back to their homes.
In fact, the resumption of life in Mocímboa da Praia is also a magnet for investors, particularly in gas exploration projects.
“In Mocímboa da Praia there are already security conditions. Electricity is there; commerce has already resumed; it has tap water; health facilities, among other services which give us no option other than to allow the population to return,” explained Filipe Nyusi.
In Mocímboa da Praia, Nyusi announced the opening of fishing, which until then was carried out conditionally due to the fear of terrorist attacks, but asked the population to work in coordination with the Defence and Security Forces and the friendly troops of Rwanda and the SADC Military Mission to Mozambique (SAMIM).
He assured that terrorists are now on the run in the face of heavy fire from the Defence and Security Forces and allied military.
“The fire is heavy but the enemy has not yet fully surrendered. Terrorists are like that, but I assure you that they are under heavy fire, so much so that the enemy left the area they were being pursued, went down to the south of Messalo and successively passed through Ancuabe, where they created disturbances”, he said.
“In Cabo Delgado people refuse to join the ranks of terrorists, and I assure you that they are having hard time making voluntary recruits”, assured the President.
