Filipe Nyusi, the incumbent President of Frelimo, is the only candidate for the leadership of the ruling party in Mozambique for the next five years.
Nyusi’s re-election is expected to be confirmed by the party’s 12th Congress, to be held from 23 to 28 September in the town of Matola, in the southern province of Maputo.
Frelimo General Secretary Roque Silva released this new information at a press conference held this Wednesday at the party’s school in Matola, which will host the Congress.
“As for the candidate for President of the party, I can say, surely, that the candidate is Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, President of Frelimo, a beloved member of the members of the sexagenarian Frelimo,” said Roque Silva when asked about the candidates for party president at a press conference.
The Congress will review Frelimo’s statutes and analyse and approve the party’s new five-year plan.
The event will focus on internal elections, namely the election of a new Central Committee, which will then have the responsibility of electing the secretary-general, the new secretary-general and the credentials committee.
“We will also analyse and approve, at the party level, a new component that, in previous statutes, was not very practical, which is the introduction of some innovations that will allow us to value those who represent the historical heritage of Frelimo, for having been great workers in the construction of our Frelimo,” he said.
According to the Secretary General of Frelimo, the Congress will bring about two thousand participants, of which 1,500 delegates and 500 guests from parties or “friendly” organizations from all over the world.
