Mozambique won five gold medals on the final day of the African Boxing Championship at the Académica pavilion in Maputo on Saturday.
Alcinda Panguana won gold in the 60-70 kg category, beating Brigitte Mbabi from DR Congo in the final of the women’s light middleweight competition. In the 70-75 kg class, Rady Gramane beat Algerian Djouher Benan to take the women’s middleweight title.
For the first time, the Mozambican men won three gold medals.
Nordine Yassine won gold against Cameroon’s Marcial Wouang in the 48 kg category, Armando Sigaúque defeated Kenyan Samuel Wairimu in the 57 kg final, and Julio Gabriel Albino Junior ( Solomone) beat Cameroonian Arouna Ntosengeh in the 80-96 kg final.
Mozambican boxers Paulo Jorge and Helena Bagão ended their participation in the event with bronze medals, in what is the country’s best participation in African boxing championships to date.
In all, Mozambique won seven medals, five gold and two bronze.
This is an unprecedented feat in Mozambican sport, president of the Mozambican Boxing Federation Gabriel Junior says.
“As far as I know, this is the first time in the history of post-independence Mozambique that the country has participated in a championship and won seven medals across all categories. This means that we have five African champions, winning more medals than Morocco, which is a colossus, and than Zambia and Cameroon, likewise. This is work; this is history,” he exclaimed.
