The Chairperson of the Assembly of the Republic (AR), Esperança Bias says that swift and decisive response from the Mozambican Defence and Security Forces (FDS) have helped to improve security situation in the areas facing terrorist attacks in the northern province of Cabo Delgado.
Bias made this assertion during a virtual meeting held this Tuesday (13) with the Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference (CCPPC), Wang Yang. CCPPC is China’s China’s top political advisory body.

Joint operations carried out by Mozambican Defence and Security Forces with the support of military contingents from Rwanda and the Southern African Development Community Military Mission (SAMIM), have allowed the government to retake control from terrorist, and there are now under way several initiatives to rebuild infrastructure.
‘Mozambique is at peace despite occasional terrorist attacks in some regions of Cabo Delgado and very recently in Nampula. But thanks to the firm and readiness of the Defence and Security Forces the situation remains calm,’ she said.
Bias declared that thanks to the success of the FDS and allied with forces, ‘the populations are already starting to return to their homes’.
About a week ago, in the locality of Chipene, Memba district, north of Nampula, terrorists set fire to property, a health centre, including a Catholic Church, and shot dead three people, including an Italian missionary, Maria de Coppi, aged 83.
Even with this latest attack Mozambican authorities reassure that the FDS are on pursuit of the terrorists who launched this incursion in Nampula, and in other districts of Cabo Delgado.
According to official estimates there are currently over 850,000 internally displaced people due to the conflict, which also killed another 3,000 triggering a humanitarian crisis.
Despite terrorism and Covid-19 pandemic, Mozambique government remains firm and believes that relations with China will grow even further.
‘Relations between Mozambique and China are quite good, and this can be witnessed by the exchange of delegations between both countries,’ she said.
For his part, Wang said that in recent years friendship and cooperation ties between China and Mozambique have been cemented by the Chinese President and his Mozambican counterpart Filipe Nyusi.
Wang reminds that both Heads of State have agreed upon a number of issues which will have to be implemented scrupulously.
‘As you mentioned friendship between the two countries is long-standing, and people from both countries have forged deep friendship ties,’ Wang said.
