The Mozambican health authorities on Thursday reported 14 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease.
According to a Thursday press release from the Ministry of Health, ten of the new cases were men and four were women. They were between three and 82 years old. Four were from Maputo city, four from Nampula and three from Tete. One case each was reported from Cabo Delgado, Zambezia and Gaza. No cases were reported from the other five provinces.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,381,087 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 502 of them in the previous 24 hours. 488 of these tests yielded negative results, and the 14 who tested positive raised the total number of positive cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 230,032.
The positivity rate (the percentage of those tested found to be carrying the coronavirus) rose from 1.63 per cent on Wednesday to 2.79 per cent on Thursday.
No Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital on Thursday and no new cases were admitted. The number of patients undergoing medical care in the Covid-19 wards fell from 11 on Wednesday to 10 on Thursday, four of whom were in intensive care and receiving supplementary oxygen.
The release reported one further death from Covid-19. This victim was an 82 year old woman who died in Maputo. This brought the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique to 2,120.
No recoveries were reported on Thursday and so the total number of recoveries remains 227,612, which is 98.95 per cent of all Covid-19 cases ever diagnosed in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 rose from 183 on Wednesday to 196 on Thursday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Maputo city, 47; Niassa, 31; Zambezia, 29; Nampula, 23; Cabo Delgado, 22; Sofala, 15; Gaza, 13; Tete, 10; Manica, four; Inhambane, one; and Maputo province, one.
The Ministry press release also reported that a further 3,142 people were vaccinated against Covid-19 on Thursday. The total number fully vaccinated against the disease now stands at 14,671,245, which is 96.5 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
