Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi yesterday discharged former Renamo combatant Olimpio Cambona from his post as Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Defence Forces of Mozambique (FADM), a statement from the presidency has announced.
The press release does not indicate any reason for the dismissal or name a successor.
As lieutenant general, Cambona was the highest-ranking Renamo member to join FADM, the Mozambique defence forces set up under the General Peace Agreement of 1992 and composed of fighters from Renamo and members of the Popular Forces of Liberation of Mozambique (FPLM) which came from the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo).
Renamo has repeatedly accused the Frelimo government of marginalising officials from the opposition and favouring officials linked to the ruling party.
The de-politicisation of the Defence and Security Forces of Mozambique is one of the agenda points in the current negotiations being held between the Mozambican government and Renamo with the aim of bringing to an end the long-running political and military crisis in the country.
Negotiations are currently on hold at the request of the international mediators, who have requested time for consultations with leaders of the government and Renamo on the main opposition party’s demand to take over governance in the six provinces where it claims victory in the 2014 general elections.
