President of the Republic Filipe Nyusi has reiterated the need for megaprojects in the district of Palma, Cabo Delgado province, to restart.
The head of state asserted that the insecurity that forced companies to suspend activities was now under control, and the district safer.
President Nyusi cited the return of residents and the reopening of commercial activity and accommodation services as evidence that should reassure investors, both domestic and international.
200,000 families have returned
Filipe Nyusi was speaking just minutes after the presentation of a report by the State Representative Services and the Provincial Executive of Cabo Delgado, which states that around 200,000 families that had left Cabo Delgado had already returned to their areas of origin.
The president stressed that this return, in addition to encouraging investors to invest in districts affected by terrorism and relocating them to areas on the development path, would also encourage the National Defence and Security Forces and their counterparts from Rwanda and the SADC.
“The security forces will be motivated to know that they have liberated territories and that residents have returned to their lives. Investors should therefore also return, while the Government guarantees security,” President Nyusi insisted, noting that residents had never been pressured into returning. “People felt the need to return to their homes on a voluntary basis, the same way they felt obliged to abandon them due to terrorism,” he explained.
Filipe Nyusi asked the local government to closely monitor the return of the displaced, creating adequate conditions through the provision of basic services, such as health and education.
In the report presented to the head of state on the occasion of his visit to Cabo Delgado, Secretary of State António Supeia reported that, despite the adversities, the province was growing, with revenues increasing by around 26 million meticais since last year.
Supeia highlighted the agriculture, fisheries, livestock and mining sectors as those contributing most, citing rubies and graphite as the outstanding minerals.
