Mozambique: People trying to work among destruction from political riots

A 28-year-old man died on Avenida da Marginal, Maputo city, in the early hours of Sunday when the car he was driving crashed into the brick fence of ‘Clube Naval’ and caught fire, Notícias reports.
A source from the Traffic Police said that the South African-registered vehicle was heading from the Joaquim Chissano Conference Centre to the Praça Robert Mugabe.
The source added that the accident was caused by speeding.
Miramar reported yesterday that, although the vehicle had a South African number plate, the driver was a Mozambican national.
However, O País reported, also yesterday, that there were two persons in the vehicle: “One person died and another was injured as a result of a road accident that occurred this morning, on Avenida Marginal, in Maputo City, ” reads the report.
According to witnesses cited by O País, the car hit the wall of the Clube Naval, exactly in the place where the security guards are, and, luckily, the one who was on duty was absent from his post” at the moment of the crash.
Shortly after the clash, according one of the club’s workers, identified as Flávio, the vehicle started to burn, the security guards tried to put out the flames with a fire extinguisher and, without success, called the fire department.
“We arrived and took the injured man to his family members’ car, the other team was establishing the means to extinguish the fire, it took us eight minutes to quell the flames,” said Lucas Huo, an agent for the National Public Safety Service, cited by O País.
Some of the wreckage ended up on the edge of the sea, O País concludes.
