A road accident occurred on National Road Number 1 (EN1) in Matinga neighbourhood, Marracuene, Maputo province, this morning.
At least ten people suffered serious and minor injuries as a result of a head-on collision between a passenger transport vehicle and a meat truck, Miramar reports.
District Director of Health in Marracuene, Fancelino Chiveti, told Radio Mozambique that enquiries into how many people were injured were still ongoing.
“We cannot advance any numbers or give details, we can only give details soon, because it is a work that we are doing in coordination with colleagues from the Traffic Police,” Chiveti said.
He added that all the victims were in the first instance referred to the Marracuene Health Centre and “at this moment work is being done to select the seriously injured to be transferred to the Maputo Central Hospital and some to José Macamo [hospital]”.
The Police and the Public Salvation Corps at the scene did what they could to help the victims, who were lying on the ground.
The driver of the vehicle travelling from Maputo to Maxixe was initially stuck in the cabin and was only extracted thanks to the efforts of bystanders, Miramar reports.
Excessive speed and irregular overtaking were indicated by witnesses as the probable cause of the accident.
