Kagame, Chapo hail good relations as Rwanda, Mozambique sign new agreements

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, has held a telephone conversation with his counterpart from Senegal, acting President of the African Union Macky Sall.
According to a statement from the presidency, President Nyusi expressed gratitude to Senegal for its support in the election of Mozambique as a non-permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and congratulated President Sall on his leadership of the African Union.
The communiqué states that the call was aimed at thanking Senegal and sharing information about President Nyusi’s recent telephone conversation with the President of Ukraine and other matters of mutual interest.
Nyusi said that President Zelensky talked in detail about the evolution of the war in his country and on the human and material consequences that have been reported by the media.

President Nyusi indicated that, having thanked him for the information, he had expressed his concern about the loss of life and destruction of infrastructure, stressing that Mozambique was not in favour of war, and prioritized dialogue.
He explained to the President of Ukraine Mozambique’s position of abstention as encouragement for a negotiated and speedy solution to the conflict, and as a way of putting an end to the deaths and destruction, as well as the negative impact on the global economy and the cost of living.
He indicated that the President of Ukraine had expressed interest in holding a meeting with African countries to explain to them the situation in his country and to explore forms of economic cooperation and measures to face the increase in food prices and cost of living.
Nyusi shared with President Sall Mozambique’s position during its tenure as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, counting on his support and that of other non-permanent African members in that body and all African countries, prioritizing consultations and defence of the continent’s interests, rights human rights, international peace and security.
In turn, President Macky Sall reiterated his congratulations on Mozambique’s election to the Security Council and his support for the Mozambican mandate, and thanked President Nyusi for sharing the information.
He said that he had had the opportunity to speak with the President of Ukraine and the President of Russia about the conflict between the two countries and reiterated his rejection of the war, as well as encouraging direct dialogue without intermediaries to find a solution to the conflict and stop with loss of life and destruction of infrastructure.
The two heads of state agreed on the need to maintain their openness to meeting the President of Ukraine whenever he wanted, and with any interested party. They were unanimous on the need to prioritize the search for peace, without neglecting the openness to addressing issues of economic cooperation and trade between Ukraine and Africa. They expressed their willingness to help the warring parties to end the war through dialogue.
They converged on the need for African countries to develop their agriculture as a way of guaranteeing food security and reducing dependence on imports.
